Witnesses Needed in Parker County Car Wreck

Parker County - Weatherford - Car Wreck

From the Weatherford Democrat:

Few witnesses report grim crash

Galen Scott

gscott@weatherforddemocrat.com

Weatherford Police are encouraging anyone who witnessed a disturbing collision which left a father, 49, and his 8-year-old son in critical condition Tuesday to come forward.

Authorities say a number of motorists probably saw what happened. Prosecutors often rely on witness testimony.

“That intersection is crazy busy and I know there had to be more witnesses than what we had,” Weatherford Police Det. Wendy Field said.

The collision took place in the middle of one of Weatherford’s busiest intersections shortly before 6 p.m., when people are driving home from work.

The father and son were traveling on South Bowie Drive in a silver, two-door Honda Accord when they were hit by a man police believe was driving while intoxicated.

Both the child and his father were listed in critical condition Thursday, though the boy is now reportedly responsive.

After receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries at an area hospital, the man police say caused the accident, Joshua Alvey, 28, was charged with two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle/serious bodily injury, and one count of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle.

Alvey reportedly told police he departed his place of employment and consumed alcohol alone in a parking lot near the scene of the accident.

A short time later, citizens reported witnessing a blue Hyundai Santa Fe smash into at least two unoccupied vehicles.

Authorities chased the blue Hyundai, driven by Alvey, east into Hudson Oaks until he turned around and traveled back through Weatherford, eventually colliding with the Honda Accord at the intersection of South Bowie Drive, Ranger Highway, Mineral Wells Highway and North Bowie Drive.

Police believe Alvey is a former resident of Weatherford, though he currently resides in Bridgeport.

He remains in the Parker County Jail with bond set at $37,500.

Sexual Predator Sentenced to 24 Years

Monroe Louisiana Attorney -- Monroe Louisiana Sexual Assault Battery

From the Shreveport Times

MONROE — A former youth mentor has been sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison on three counts of sexual battery of a juvenile. State Judge Carl Sharp ordered the three, eight-year sentences to run consecutively.

Sharp rendered his sentence Thursday after hearing emotional pleas from the fathers of two of the victims who asked the judge to give 26-year-old Jeremy Little the maximum of 30 years.

The fathers said their sons were given liquor and then drugged before they were molested by Little.

At the time of his arrest in January, Sterlington Police Chief Barry Bonner said Little was serving as a youth mentor at the Assembly of God Church of Sterlington and was residing with an associate pastor.

Car Wreck Likely Due to Drunk Driving

From the Weatherford Democrat.

Weatherford Texas Lawyer; Parker County Texas lawyer; Weatherford Attorney; Parker County lawyer; car wreck lawyer

WEATHERFORD — The driver who caused a major accident Tuesday has been identified by Weatherford Police.

Authorities arrested 28-year-old Joshua Alvey of Bridgeport on charges relating to a pursuit which ended in a crash that sent a father and son to area hospitals with “life-threatening injuries.”

Late Tuesday afternoon, Weatherford Police officers were dispatched to the area of 100 South Lamar Street regarding a complaint of an intoxicated driver. While officers were being dispatched, authorities received two complaints of hit and run accidents involving the same suspect vehicle. Those accidents were minor with no injuries reported.

Weatherford officers located the vehicle on Fort Worth Highway and attempted stop the driver. Alvey reportedly failed to yield and led officers on a pursuit east to Hudson Oaks. Reports say he then turned around and headed back westbound into Weatherford.

As officers continued to pursue him, Alvey allegedly continued westbound until he reached the intersection of Palo Pinto Street and South Bowie Drive, where he struck a silver Honda Accord two-door. The momentum of the impact carried both vehicles through the intersection into a third vehicle.

The Honda was occupied by an 8-year-old child and his 49-year-old father. The child was transported by CareFlite helicopter from the scene to Cook Children’s Hospital and his father was transported by ambulance to JPS Hospital. According to WPD, both the father and son suffered critical injuries. A 40-year-old female in the third vehicle was transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

“This was a very severe accident that resulted in very critical injuries to several of the victims involved,” Lt. Chris Crawford stated. “The investigation will take several days and the suspect will likely be charged with several felony offenses as a result of his reckless actions.”

Alvey appeared to have non-life threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Harris Hospital in Fort Worth. He was later released into the custody of Weatherford Police Department.

Alvey was arrested and charged with two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury and evading arrest. He was taken to the Parker County Jail.

Finally: Hope for Homeowners!

Austin, Texas; Travis County, Texas:

The Texas Residential Construction Commission, or "Train Wreck," could be closed early next year under a bill approved Saturday by the Texas Senate.

The TRCC which has done nothing but close the doors of the courthouse to Texas homeowners could occur as early at February 2010. Governor Perry, who has taken tens of thousands of dollars, signed Train Wreck into law after being urged to do so from his homebuilder-buddies.

Perry made sure buyers were not able to sue his friends by signing the bill into law. Governor Perry has taken numerous steps to make sure his homebuilder and insurance pals would not have to pay for their negligence.

If the shutdown occurs in February 2010, as approved by senators, it would be the first state agency closed in years. The agency has 80 employees.

Last year, the Sunset Advisory Commission staff recommended the agency be abolished, labeling its operations as "fatally flawed" and saying that it does more harm than good for consumers. Lame duck Perry is likely feeling pain from the idea that Texans would, once again, be able to stand on equal footing with his campaign contributors.

Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon, D-San Antonio, author of a House bill that would continue the commission's operations, said the Senate wants to kill the agency because the House version would have beefed up consumer protections.

The House bill would have done away with a $250 filing fee for homeowners, developed a licensing process for builders, created an ombudsman's office in the agency and set deadlines for agency action so that homeowners could then proceed to file suit in court against builders.

Created at the urging of homebuilders, who sought a process to make sure they could not be held accountable for shoddy work, the agency quickly became the target of complaints.

Texas Teen Dies - - Fraternity Hazing

SAN LUIS OBISPO, California - (from the Associated Press)

Carson Starkey, 18, of Austin, Texas was found dead in December with a blood-alcohol level between 0.39 percent and 0.44 percent.
Police said he had to drink a bag full of alcoholic beverages as part of the fraternity pledging process.
"This investigation has exposed a ritual that was as disturbing as it was deadly," Police Chief Deborah Linden said. "Carson's death was the result of a crime and it was entirely preventable."
Haithem Ibrahim, 20, of Lafayette, and Zacary Ellis, 22, of San Luis Obispo were charged with felony hazing causing death. Russell Taylor, 22, of Fresno, and Adam Marszal, 21, of Carmichael were charged with misdemeanor hazing. All four California Polytechnic State University students face a misdemeanor charge of permitting a minor to consume alcohol.
Starkey was pledging the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, which has since been suspended.
According to fraternity tradition, the pledges participated in "Brown Bag Night," in which a "Big Brother" purchased alcohol and put it in a brown bag for each pledge to consume, police said.
Ibrahim was Starkey's "Big Brother," but because he was not yet 21, Taylor allegedly purchased the alcohol on his behalf. Police said Marszal, Taylor and Ibrahim went to two stores to buy liquor, including 151-proof Everclear.
On the night of Dec. 1, the pledges gathered in a garage that fraternity members had prepared with tarps on the furniture and a bucket for vomit, police said.
The 17 pledges sat in a circle around the bucket and Ellis allegedly instructed them to drink all the alcohol in their bags by midnight. The "Big Brothers" watched while the pledges drank.
The investigation found that when Starkey passed out, several members put him in a car to take him to a hospital -- removing his pledge pin so he wouldn't be associated with the fraternity -- but he then began vomiting so they took him back to the house and put him to bed. Police said the members checked on him until everyone went to bed about 2 a.m.
When he was found unresponsive the next morning, fraternity members allegedly shooed other pledges out of the house before police and paramedics arrived.
"Dangerous hazing rituals remain part of the culture of certain groups -- a culture that claims to promote leadership and value friendship, but which fails to protect young and impressionable recruits who simply want to belong," Linden said.
Starkey's parents said in a statement they believed their son would not have wanted to join a fraternity if he knew the initiation rituals were dangerous.
"He participated in a dangerous fraternity ritual during which he was compelled to drink a fatal amount of alcohol. His death was not caused by 'voluntarily' drinking too much, and anyone who might suggest otherwise is misinformed," they said.
Ibrahim and Ellis were released on $50,000 bail and face up to three years in state prison if convicted of the felonies. Taylor and Marszal were released on $10,000 bail and face up to a year in county jail if convicted of the misdemeanors.
Attempts to contact their attorneys on Thursday afternoon were not successful.
