Grass Fire in Parker County causes Damages

Dry grass and weed cuttings fueled a grass fire that spread into a heavily-wooded area Tuesday consuming approximately 15 acres and threatening several nearby homes.

The fire occurred a short distance west of where Franko Switch Road intersects with Old Authon Road in northwest Parker County.

At approximately 1 p.m., the fire was intentionally started in the center of a vacant pasture, according to Yancee Plowman, 22, who takes care of the property reportedly owned by his grandparents.

“We cut and raked the pasture and we were trying to burn the weeds,” Plowman said, claiming he notified fire officials beforehand.

Firefighters from several agencies responded, including Cool-Garner, Greenwood, Weatherford and the Parker County Fire Marshal’s Office.

The blaze was extinguished as it spread to within 100 yards of the Curtis residence, threatening livestock outside the home.

Dorothy Catuogno, 79, saturated the ground outside her home with a garden hose.

“I know what fire can do out here,” she said.

Catuongo’s granddaughter, Stephanie Bickett, 20, lives nearby. As the fire approached, Bickett released two donkeys from a pen and prepared to leave the residence with her grandmother.

“It was moving very fast,” she said. “We probably would have been OK for a few more minutes, but then it might have been a good idea to leave.”
